Lore
The People's Brineland Republic is a unique realm both culturally and organizationally when compared to many of the realms in the world of Belegarth. Located along the edge of an immensely wide and shallow river in an expansive flatlands, known as the Brine river. Due to it's unusual amounts of salt content in the water, and natural salt beds located upon the banks of the river. The surrounding flatlands are mostly made of patches of wild tall grass, flowers, sparse trees, and patches of fertile farmland and grazing land tended to by members of the community. With a moderately sized village at the center that acts as a hub for the government and skilled labor. The People's Brineland Republic is a peasant community who's government mostly exists to help settle dispute between different groups within the community and helps run daily operations. The government also provides mutual aid and social safety nets, as well as helping organize a defense force when the lands and populace are threatened by outside forces. While the People's Brineland Republic does have knights, the knights swear fealty to the people of the realm and the community rather than landed nobility or a king.
The People's Brineland Republic was founded by peasants who had overthrown the cruel, despotic, and tyrannical rule of a landed nobility and a corrupt king that had extracted and hoarded the fruits of their labor. Any attempt to change this status quo was met with censorship, punishment, and often times extreme, brutal state violence and the threat of monsters who ate human flesh at the edge of its borders. Monsters who could only be defeated by the knights who served the king and were often times landed nobles themselves.
However, after a particularly dry growing season led to a lower yield during harvest season followed by, a long and harsh winter after years of mismanagement of grain stores led to a famine and the deaths of many. The people buried their children, their siblings, their parents, their cousins, their aunts, their uncles, their grandparents, friends, lovers, members of their community they had known their whole lives. The king, the nobles and their knights however stayed fed and warm despite the suffering of those they were tasked with protecting. Any attempts by the people to try and forage or request food was met with death on the order of the king, his nobles, and acted out by the hands of the knights that served them. The dead were buried in mass graves that were too shallow due to the hard frozen ground. Which when the ground thawed that spring along with heavy rains made the bodies of the dead rise from the mud. These bodies brought with them disease. This plague the nobles could not insulate themselves from. As more and more peasants and nobles died, the people of the realm saw that they had the opportunity to save themselves and the people they loved from the nobles who had starved them and killed them for trying to save themselves. That summer when the heat was at it's greatest the people formed into armies wielding farming tools, clubs, knives, hunting bows, rocks, and their bare fists and marched into the homes of the nobles and their knights and killed them.
After a period of violent revolution and instability the peasant army ultimately won in the end. They captured the fortress of the king and hung his body from the highest tower in his fortress as a warning to all that would choose to opress and starve his fellow man. Taking his crown they melted it down, ground it into dust, and spread the dust to the wind. They then that very day vowed to never allow one person to control the lives of another person. Burning the royal charter and laws the people drafted a new set of laws and created the People's Brineland Republic.
After the founding of the People's Brineland Republic, many former peasants were still worried about the threat of flesh eating monsters. When contact with the monsters eventually came, it was found that the people had more in common with the monster folk than they did those that claimed to protect them from the monsters. With that realization the republic formed a peace treaty with the varies groups of monsters that surrounded the Brineland. So long as they did not bring harm they would be tolerated and granted the same rights as humans in the People's Brineland Republic and were free to settle in their own communities along the river. Though these communities of monster folk are few and far between and mostly keep to themselves.
