Olaf was just a boy, when his father Grainald went forth to certain death against the English at the battle for Ginneigh Top. Grainald was a strong willed and proud Ginnic Scot, of pure O’Reilly blood. It was with great bitterness that he went forth at Ginneigh Top, in a regiment lead by an untrustworthy Shanahan clansmen. Before facing their end, the Shanahan tribune ordered a retreat, unheard of by O’Reillys and complete blasphemy to Grainald. The 20 soldiers he was with made for the woods to escape death. The shame was too much to bear for Grainald. All of the O’Reillys save a handful had perished that day with honor, but he fell back. The dishonor drove him insane, and when he found his family in sanctuary with the surviving O’Reillys in the wood of Blackborrow, he unleashed himself upon them. He savagely murdered his whore and beat all of his children to death, save young Olaf, whom he tormented for years. Grainald’s malice sept into the naïve mind of Olaf, and once he reached the age of sixteen he butchered his father with a knife and feasted upon his flesh. Olaf’s dedication to Ginneigh was complete, but his nature was that of a twisted cannibal. He eats the flesh of his enemies, he decapitates harmless woodland creatures, and cooks babies for amusement. He is meticulous in his weapon smithing abilities, and that is why Salochstagh keeps the insane butcher in his company.
