A buckler is a term that (in Belegarth) commonly refers to smaller shields (minimum 12 inch diameter) that are traditionally either strapped to the forearm or held by a single center grip, thus keeping the offhand free to utilize equipment. A newer variety of buckler straps to the upper arm or shoulder, and is mostly utilized by spearmen. Bucklers are mostly used by Archers, Florentiners, or Polearmsmen.
