A typical formation when there are a large amount of people on the field. Each army will form into one continuous line and usally meet in the middle of the field. This is most commonly seen during bridge battles. This formation doesn't showcase people indiviuals skills as much as it's more about teamwork and keeping your team alive.
The primary defense in this formation is the shield. The primary offense is the spear/polearm. Missile weapons, archery and javelins, serve as support.
When the line is broken or the flank has been compromised, either by weak flank or by poor leadership (i.e. leaving a hole), this allows for the skirmishers to attack the back side of the rest of line.
