I believe the reason why is because PVC at that length tends to flex too much and will fail. Also, you clearly missed the part that said double-ended weapons are silly and you really shouldn't bother building one because you won't use it much on a real field. Why is PVC out of the question? I made a very nice double ended weapon out of pvc, heavy duty pool noodles, pipe isolation, blue foam and a Nerf football.
