Phye’s eyes lit up bright green as they looked up at me with a start. They snickered, “we’ll see how long I remain the champion.” Whether this was said out of ambition or doubt I couldn’t tell, either way Phye was our last hope at preventing the war. Though they had knowledge beyond their years and magic strong enough to rival Jor’gna they were still only five months old.

“True, with that attitude of yours you might get thrown into a volcanic vent before you reach adulthood.” I told them effectively silencing their smart mouth. Ahead was the entrance to the Repfilian caste city of Rotz. On either side of the crevice the Repfilian caste symbol was etched into the stone and glowed with the living letters of the city’s protection spells. At the gate stood two turtle-spawn soldiers.

“Oh my! You are quite the specimen Phye!” exclaimed Nynrah as they slithered around Phye, who despite their age was already the size of an adult fish caste Deep One. Nynrah enthusiastically looked over every inch of Phye who stood awkwardly in the gate’s Garrison. Around us the garrison was alive with whispers concerning myself and the young Phye. Vice Admiral Nynrah was intently studying the plants that grew upon Phye’s head and back when Tornal rumbled into the room which fell silent. Tornal, the other Vice Admiral of the Repfilians, was the current champion of the caste and no one knew how they were going to react to the new champion.

“So where is my replacement? I have a gift for them.” The speaking of which made all the eyes in the room travel from Tornal to Phye who at this time was completely entwined in Nynrah in the middle of the room. Tornal then began slowly and forbiddingly stomping towards the other Vice Admiral and New Champion. Nynrah slowly began unwinding themselves from Phye as Tornal lumbered towards them. Tornal stood towering over Phye, their carved and scarred flesh telling the stories of all the battles they’d fought. They looked down at Phye and slowly pulled a large bone harpoon from their back.

“Today is the day little one! Today you shall be brought to your caste and be presented before Vice Admiral Nynrah as the new champion of the Repfilians.”

Phye’s eyes lit up bright green as they looked up at me with a start. They snickered, “we’ll see how long I remain the champion.” Whether this was said out of ambition or doubt I couldn’t tell, either way Phye was our last hope at preventing the war. Though they had knowledge beyond their years and magic strong enough to rival Jor’gna, they were still only five months old.

“Who goes there?”

“I am Qalupalik the current High Admiral of the Order. I bring with me the new champion of the Repfilian caste.”

Before the guards could respond I heard their shrill voice echo from the cavern that these fish protected. “Ah there you are Qalupalik! You’re late! You should have been here days ago especially since you brought us our new champion.” Yelled Vice Admiral Nynrah as they took down the wards that protected the city. “Come in, come in, I want to meet the new Champion.”

“Well here I am Nynrah.” Phye stated disdainfully.

They bellowed, “May you be victorious in all your battles and stand tall over the bodies of your enemies.” As they handed the heavy weapon to the seemingly small Lion-Turtle spawn. “I will be at your service to train you to be the best champion there has ever been.”

Nynrah slithered over to me as Tornal continued with some sort of pledge or speech to Phye. They led me out into the hallway as Tornal continued their dramatization.

“So how bad is it?” asked Nynrah eyes focused on where my right arm once was.

“Its been slowed, the Lion-Turtle used some magic to halt the spread, for a time at least.”

“Do you know how long it’ll last?”

“Hopefully long enough.”

“Then there is no time to waste.”
