“Why are we even listening to Bakekujira? Just because they came first does not mean they have the authority to boss us around!” screamed Jor’gna, head of the Cephlon caste

“We listen not because they came before us but because they have more knowledge than us. Knowledge is authority this is how it works and how it will always work. This is why we worship Dagon. Not only is Dagon our creator but is also the most knowledgeable organism in existence.” I replied calmly and disinterested. I had more pressing matters than the qualms of the Cephlon caste.

“But they came from a whale! Whales are not meant to be used for Deep One production, they’re for war and trading! They’re just big stupid mammals!”

“Ugh! Will you just shut up? Dagon made us to fill a specific void in our society. Bakekujira is one of the seven and as such is to be respected. If your caste has been given orders by Bakekujira carry them out to the letter. The council meets with Dagon who gives each a task. If Bakekujira has given you a task it comes straight from Dagon. Follow it to the letter or get thrown into one of the vents as a heretic.”

Jor’gan grew silent and left my abode. He left me in my quiet reef of orange-yellow coral. The bio-luminescent plankton lit my now empty hall with a half light that made one feel completely alone and at peace. In front of me sat the dinner I had hardly touched even before Jor’gna arrived. I stared blankly at my crest above my door. A symbol that I once proudly bore was now the weight that kept me in my chair, unable to face the difficulties of my task at hand. I needed to go run some tests. I needed to find what happened. After what seemed to be hours but was probably only a few minutes I finally got the strength the leave my seat and continue my work. I started towards my study.

“So the children of the cephalopods don’t like taking orders from a mammal, if only they knew why Bakekujira is their Admiral now.” Said the voice in the darkness.

“Ulthar you know as well as I do that they can’t know what happened to Istasha. We don’t even know what happened to Istasha not even Dagon knows and he created us. All we can do is run tests and record our information. Only then will we know more.”

“Well soon you’ll have some more data points.”

As Ulthar said this they pulled off their right glove showing the coralline petrified flesh that made up their right arm.

“So its happening to you too…”

“Indeed, this makes four of us.”

“Has Bakekujira been made aware of your condition?”

“Yes. Based on their calculations I only have a few weeks until I’m in the same state as Istasha. That’s why I’m here though, I have a favor to ask of you old friend.”

“But the research, we need to discover what this is. We need to know wh-“

“Qalupalik, at this rate the problem won’t be what is causing this, it’ll become how do we carry on without the Esoteres?”

“It won-“

“Yes it will, Bakekujira and I have both seen this. Here,” Ulthar retrieved a cylindrical tzncrom from within their robes, “take this, live it and understand what it means. Prevent the ruin of our people.”
