Origin

The lady Ari is the mother of all Kitsune. She is the only Kitsune with 10 tails. The Lady Ari and Inari are the creators of the Kitsune species. This is the story of how it all began. In the year 765 Inari came to Lady Ari with a request. Inari wanted Lady Ari to help her create a celestial being to help guard her shrine and also a messenger. The lady Ari agreed. Together they combined celestial power, wisdom, cleverness, and the spirit of a wandering white fox near Inari's shrine. The called this being a Myobu. In the course of 500 years many more Myobu were created. After all of that time the Myobu gained intelligence.

In the year 1156 the very first Myobu named Akomachi requested to meet with lady Ari and Inari. Akomachi (Ako for short) said to them. “I Have a request. I want to be free. I want to return and explore the mortal world. I want a physical body like I once had. I yearn to feel the earth under my paws again. To run around and to dig a den. I miss my mortal life so…” Inari looked to Lady Ari with sadness in her eyes. Ako continued. “I have served you for 500 years, I’ve even gained intelligence.” Ako looked to Lady Ari who then looked to Inari. “My dear Akomachi” Inari replied.” As much as I'd love to give you that gift, It’s impossible for you to ever be what you once were.” Ako Yowled with sadness. Lady Ari then spoke up. “ Inari we took this beautiful creature from all she loved for our own selfish reasons. We turned her into Myobu. Why is it we cannot return her to the mortal world ? After all she has done for us? I will take it upon myself to watch over her.” Inari replies with. “I never said Akomachi could not return to the mortal world only that she can never be what she once was. Ako you have gained intelligence, wisdom, celestial powers and numerous abilities. You have become so much more than a simple fox.” Ako thought about this for a moment. She then stated. “Then what if I became the first of a new race?” Lady Ari and Inari looked at each other shocked by her words. The both replied. “ Give us some time to discuss this possibility.” A week later they summoned Akomachi to meet with them. “Akomachi. Inari and i have discussed your request. However first you need to understand a few things. Once we return you to the mortal world you will no longer be able to communicate with us. We will no longer be able to help you. Only watch over you. We do not know how you will manifest or what your physical abilities will be. Ako you will be the only one of your kind for at least a 100 years. We will not be able to create another like you until then. If you survive we will create a mate for you to continue the species. If you can agree to all of this we will return you to the mortal world.” Ako knew this would be hard. It would be lonely and scary but also exciting. She decided to go. This is how the Kitsune Species began.

Characteristics

Kitsune are complex creatures. They are divided into two races, Yuseiune and Nogitsune. However most Kitsune have these thirteen traits in common whether they be Yuseiune or Nogitsune. From the beginning of time they have been trickster with allegiance to no one. Kitsune have become akin to both Eris and Loki. All Kitsune have between 1-9 tails. However cannot gain their second tail until they reach maturity. Along with that Kitsune reach maturity at between the ages of 15 and 20. It’s very common for Kitsune to be mischievous, self-absorbed, and prideful. Kitsune are seen as evil. As long as stories of Kitsune have been around it’s know that Kitsune are known for being enlightened, yet adventurous. It’s no secret that Kitsune have short attention spans and get distracted easily. Kitsune have been clever and wise all the way back to their Myobu roots. Kitsune are an effeminate race. They appear in two forms. Fox in which they retain the amount of tails they have. Then Youku the humanoid form which retains fox like features. Kitsune are shape shifters however when doing so they cannot hide their tails.

Abilities

Abilities commonly attributed to Kitsune include but are not limited to possession, generating lighting or fire from their mouth and tails *this is called Kitsunebi*, willful manifestations in dreams of others, flight, invisibility, and creation of illusions. Kitsune Have characteristics reminiscent of Vampire or Succubi and feed on the life or spirit of humans. This is often done through sexual contact. Kitsune have 3 forms, fox form, which does however portray the amount of tails they have. Youku, which is the humanoid form which retains some fox features. Then of course there is human form.

Lore

Kitsune are born of two Kitsune parents. Although rare a drifting Kitsune soul has been known to take over a human fetus to have a physical body again. However more often than not the fetus or mother dies before it become successful. There is one way for the chances to of success to increase. This is if a male Nogitsune breeds with a human female. The fetus is then more compatible with the soul. This is only done as last resort. The human is killed after the birth of the Kitsune. The child is born 100% Kitsune. The human is merely a vessel which carries the embryo to term.

When Kitsune get married a special ceremony is held during a No Yomeiri (sun Shower). This is a ceremony only those invited are permitted to witness. It’s looked down upon by all Kitsune to come uninvited. It’s also said that those who do are cursed with bad luck. Every Kitsune is very unique. Their survival depends on what elements they are born with. All Kitsune can survive by eating beings. Liver and human infants are a delicacy among Kitsune. Long ago before Kitsune became a part of the mortal their ancestors the Myobu received offerings of rice wine at Inari shrines It’s said that Kitsune share this love of rice wine. Some Kitsune will even trade it for favors.

Like many species knowing a Kitsune true name can be used to harm them. This is why one Kitsune will go by many names. It’s rare for Kitsune to use their birth (given) name. They are weak to religious figures. This is due to the fact they able to see through a Kitsune's trickery. Said religious figures can also drain a Kitsune's stolen life energy if they know their given/birth name. Kitsune are immortal but they can be killed. The more tails a Kitsune has the harder it is to kill them. It is said that Kitsune can trade a tail to escape death. Before I begin to tell you the history of how Myobu became no more and how the species became divided. I am going to tell you a bit more on how they are. As stated Kitsune are tricksters. ALL OF THEM. however their goals or reasons for trickery are all pretty different. It ranges from mischief, and fun all the way up to malevolence. Common goals are theft of food, humiliation, vengeance, and disruption of peace. Sometime even torture. It’s said that all Kitsune use gifts as rewards or payments. However being the tricksters that they are. What seems to be money or material worth will actually just be old paper, twigs, leaves, or similar valued items. True Kitsune gifts are intangibles such as protection, knowledge, or long life. Each Kitsune earn their tails differently. Whether it be age, goals achieved , or as a reward from another more powerful Kitsune. It is said there can only be one nine tailed fox at a time. Abilities of Kitsune (Fox magic) include but are not limited to possession, generating fire or lightning from their mouths and tails this is called Kitsunebi, creation of illusions, and willful manifestations in dreams of others. The victims of theses abilities are not aware it’s not real or do not remember is occurring. None of these can be used in battle. The story I am about to tell is about how Myobu became no more and how Kitsune became the divided races of Yuseiune and Nogitsune. In the year 1156 the very first Kitsune came to be. Akomachi managed survive 100 years (1256) because of this Lady Ari and Inari created a mate for her as they promised. This Kitsune's name was Kenji. Ako's life before Kenji along with their life together before they had kits is however a story for another time. Ako had twins with Kenji. A boy and a girl. Their names are Kip and Akiri. 20 years after their birth Lady Ari and Inari created mates for Kip and Akiri. They of course had kits as well. This is how the species began to grow. Every 50 years Inari and The Lady Ari would send 2 Myobu down to the mortal world to become Kitsune. This is how the species began to grow. In the year 1426 Inari and Lady Ari created the last two Kitsune from Myobu. Akomachi had gotten small signs that Lady Ari and Inari were watching however after the year 1426 she no longer got them. Akomachi and kanji were the only Myobu that were aware that they got changed to Kitsune. The rest were given memories or sent to a Kitsune pack to be raised. In the year 1436 Akomachi and Kenji met theirs fate when a monk found and killed them. It’s said they became Myobu once again as gods themselves to watch over the Kitsune for the rest of eternity by Lady Ari’s side. Amongst Kitsune today Myobu are simply a legend or gods they look up to. The lady Ari is still looked to for guidance by many. It’s said Kip and Akiri are Still alive to this day. In the year 1456 many things started happening in the Kitsune race. At this point Kitsune were scattered across the world. Kitsune born in certain places gained unique traits. They often needed to feed on the elements around them to survive. Each area had it’s own culture and element. Most Kitsune were born with the fire element. They also had other elements depending on the place they were born. These element are Earth, Forest, Mountain, Ocean, and Music. The Kitsune race had a new weakness arise in the year 1490. Kitsune were becoming victims of their own emotions. When this happened they would change. Their yoaku form would become darker. Their fur color would change. Normally a Kitsune's color would range from white, tan, red, brown, or grey. However when a Kitsune changed their fur turned black, silver, a marbled black, or a combination of black, white, and grey. These new kitsune caused malicious and evil disruption to all the beings around. All of these kitsune had element changes. Lightning was always their new element. Over time these Kitsune became know as Nogitsune. They were hated among other kitsune. They were and still are looked at as absolute abominations to the race. They love/ed to cause pain, suffering, and destruction to all beings.They are even known to torture not just human but other kitsune as well. Nogitsune were rare at first. For an unknow reason in the year 1500 more and more kitsune seemed to succumb to their emotions. The nogitsune began to form large packs and wreak havoc. Then other kitsune had gotten tired of the nogitsune cause problems. The other kitsune decided to call themselves Yuseiune not wanting to be confused with the nogitsune. The meaning of yuseiune is wild fox. A yuseiune by the name of Nuna declared war upon the leader of the Nogitsune pack know as Keme. This war lasted

Types of Kitsune

Inari Foxes (Myobu) 

Often wear red scarfs, Jewels are also a common symbol of inari, and representations of sacred inari foxes without them are rare. Inari foxes are usually white. They are known for helping others. They are guardian kitsune. They are celestial foxes. Myobu are restricted from getting into mortal affairs, it is actually considered distasteful to do so unless requested to do so. Even by nogitsune. When a nogitsune starts harassing people near an inari shrine, the people can come to the shrine and request for inari to send aid. The myobu then track down the offending nogitsune and deal with it.

Nogitsune (Void/Dark Kitsune) 

are those who have no ties to Inari. They are tricksters, often malicious and mischievous. Even nogitsune find it rude to get into others matters. It insinuates that the other could not handle their own affairs. They are mischievous and sometimes even malevolent. They love to play tricks and disturb the peace.

Wild Kitsune (Low Kitsune) 

all other kitsune fall under this category. They often fall into the 13 basic elements found. Only two of those 13 are considered ‘bad”.

Elements

Wind (Kaze) 

Also known as Air or Kuko. Kuko are considered bad, due to the abundance and ease of access to the elements with which they control. With this study, they can create winds, cause tornadoes, and influence local weather patterns. This is also the element that manipulates ice and snow.

Spirit (Seishin) 

Kiko or Koryo, another or the “bad” kitsune, also called ghost foxes or demon foxes, this is the manipulation of the spirit world, demons, and other creatures. Magic of this nature does not work on mortals well, since mortals have SOULS, not spirits. As such, kitsune have to wait for someone to die, before this sort of magic will effect someone well. With this, a kitsune can bind, summon, banish, ward or trap a spirit.

Earth (Chikyu) 

They can manipulate rocks, transmute minerals and physical objects, and build things out of the world around them.

Fire (Kasai) 

They can create, control and manipulate fire in all manner of ways, and cook meals.

River (Kawa) 

This is a life-giving power. They can create water, or control the creatures that live in water. They can heal others with this element, and bring life to things around them.

Heaven (Tengoku) 

This is the power of magic, and the heavens. With this, a mage can teleport, call upon creatures of magic, and throw meteors at targets. This allows a kitsune to do most other magic’s at a reduced effect.

Thunder (Sanda) 

The cousin to Wind, a mage can throw lightning, cause storms, and create shields of energy. (Hey, in the future, this becomes quite powerful... control machines, net-run without a computer.

Mountain (Yama) 

Cousin to stone, this element allows for the control of the mountains, and those that live in it. With this, kitsune can cause earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides

Void (Kukan) 

This is the magic of the void. With this magic, kitsune can cause blights, drain life, summon creatures of darkness, slip into shadows to vanish, and drain the light from areas. Note: Kitsune do not consider this study 'evil', and about 1/4 or so of the kitsune race are Dark Kitsune.

Time (Ikan) 

This does *not* allow for time travel... now that that is out of the way, this *does* allow kitsune to speed up and slow down time, age or young targets and objects, and to *predict* future events. This is the perception and manipulation of time, not the mastery of reality...

Forest (Mori) 

This allows for the control and manipulation of wood, trees, and creatures of the forest. Those who study this element are almost druidic in their ability to survive and blend in with the woods, and can find herbs and roots to work salves with.

Ocean (Umi) 

This is a cousin to River, but to a larger scale. This is where kitsune cause very strong storms, flooding, and tsunamis. This is how mages conjure creatures from the depths.

Music (Ongaku) 

This is the control of sound and music. With this, kitsune can sing effects that are very similar to spells. This can control others through entrancement, ward off creatures of a supernatural nature, and control the moral of others. Think of banshees, bards, and shamans.
