However Aulë still couldn’t let his rivals win. They had tried to steal his work by placing their creatures in it, and so Aulë decided to get his revenge by creating his own race, one that would be better than all the others. He thus created the Khazâd, or Dwarves as the other races call them, to live in the world as Aulë favorites. He didn’t make them strong, or fast, or tall, or even exceptionally beautiful. Instead he gave them great knowledge on how to work steel and stone, so that they could create wonders that the other races would envy, thus gaining the Smith his revenge on the other gods.

Almost all dwarves have two names. One is a personal name given at birth and the other is a clan or family name. The family name is often something descriptive of that clan or family. For example a clan of great smiths might be called Ironbeards or a family of skilled stonemasons could be called Stonehammers. These second names are usually in khuzdul, though dwarves will often use the translation among other races in order to keep their native language secret. Most of these clans and families can u suck trace their ancestry back to a dwarf who earned their name for eather great skill at his or her craft or a great deed done to for the fortress. Yeah, like a short human... pretty much... Or a tall hobbit.

Interior of a dwarven merchant shop.

Appearance:

Dwarves are a hardy people. Shorter and stouter then men or elves, they are well suited to live in the mountains they call home. All dwarves, men and women alike, grow beards, and take great pride in them. They often braid them and, depending on the clan, decorate them with trinkets.

Culture:

Most Dwarves live in massive underground fortresses built into the sides of mountains or canyons. These fortresses protect them from monsters as well as the jealousy of elves and greed of men. Most dwarves never leave these fortresses. They instead spend their lives forging weapons or armor, carving stone, or pursuing expertise in any other crafting field. A dwarf’s worth in society is based on how good his work is, not how much wealth he has. Despite this dwarves do have a thirst for precious metals and stones, not for their worth, but for their potential beauty.

The few dwarves who do leave the fortress are not outcasts, but are just those with restless spirits. Many young dwarves go out into the world seeking adventure before returning to their fortress when old to settle down. However even while they wander they are often practicing their craft.

Dwarves often trade objects they’ve made with men for food. Dwarves don’t grow much of their own food, since their cities are usually underground and few have time to tend fields. Most of what they trade for is meat, cheese, grains, and honey. They eat the meat and cheese as food and prefer to ferment the grains and honey into strong ale and mead. Dwarven alcohol tolerance is legendary.

Dwarves view other races in a variety of ways. Since most monster races do not build structures of any worth dwarves view them as little better than animals. Dwarves despise Kobolds as they both compete for the same underground resources. They see elves as pompous and full of themselves. As for men, Dwarves often think of them as greedy and misguided younger siblings. They try hard, but don’t have the skills, patience, or lifespan to make great things.

Among the other races, dwarves are often seen as stubborn and unfriendly. They have strong opinions and stick with them, making the most stubborn human look positively meek in comparison. Their natural distrust of strangers often makes others think them xenophobic. However, once you get to know them most dwarves are quite friendly and make very loyal friends.

Most Dwarves would prefer to be left alone with their crafting, but all are trained to fight. When a fortress is under attack all but the very old and very young rush to its defense. In a pinch any weapon will do, but their preferred weapons are hammers and axes since they can also be used as tools in times of peace.

Lore:

In the beginning Aulë the Smith forged the world on an anvil vaster than the sky. He then set his greatest creation aside to cool while he began work on the moon, stars, and other planets.

While the Smith was away, the other gods snuck into his forage and, seeing the beauty he had created, were filled with greed and jealousy. So they resolved to take the world and fill it with their own creations. This they did, and when Aulë came back he found his masterpiece corrupted with the races and beasts of his fellow gods.

This angered the Smith, who then proceeded to strike the world with his hammer to destroy the corrupted remains of his greatest work. This cracked the surface; raising mountains, dropping valleys, and throwing the oceans from their basins. This catastrophe wiped out much of what the other gods had made, but before all died Aulë realized that the inhabitants of the world weren’t to blame for what had happened and took pity on them, sparing the world form complete destruction.

Religion:

Dwarves at work.

The dwarven religion is based on the worship of Aulë the Smith. But unlike humans Dwarves do not erect temples to their god and do not pray. Instead they see everything they make as tribute to Aulë. If they want to gain special favors from him they might craft an especially beautiful object, but unlike men dwarven worship is comparatively quiet.

Language:

The dwarves Language is Khuzdul, which is a secret language used only around other dwarves. Khuzdul is often used to inscribe enchanted runes on the gates of fortresses. These runes are often a riddle, and whoever can answer that riddle can gain entry. Keeping the language secret thus protects their cities as well as the wealth accumulated within.

Garb:

Dwarven garb is fairly nonstandard. Their clothing varies a great deal between clans. Most dwarves prefer to go into battle with some kind of armor. They usually prefer metal armor, especially chainmail, to leather. Dwarves never cover their faces in battle in order to keep their beards exposed as a challenge to their foes. Shaving a dwarf is the ultimate humiliation, only reserved for the most serious of crimes. Death is preferable.

Names:

Almost all dwarves have two names. One is a personal name given at birth and the other is a clan or family name. The family name is often something descriptive of that clan or family. For example a clan of great smiths might be called Ironbeards or a family of skilled stonemasons could be called Stonehammers. These second names are usually in khuzdul, though dwarves will often use the translation among other races in order to keep their native language secret. Most of these clans and families can trace their ancestry back to a dwarf who earned their name for eather great skill at his or her craft or a great deed done to for the fortress. These lineages can go back anywhere from decades to several centuries, since any time a dwarf dose something worthy of remembrance he or she can chose to take a new second name and start a new family or clan.
