This is a list of the 'house rules' that we generally use. Many of these are widely accepted as common use, but I felt they were worthwhile to write down, so that when people are visiting,
there wouldn't be any suprises. Rasheab 23:55, 21 October 2008 (EDT)

Rules Guidelines:

  • We follow "shot in motion." If a "swing" is at least halfway through its "arc" when its owner is killed, the shot continues through to completion. As always, the receiver of a blow determines whether a hit is valid.
  • We do allow an individual to grab the striking surface of his own weapon.
  • Weapon (or arm, if your weaponless) above your head indicates your dead.
  • In poor weather you have the option to post your leg instead of going down on one knee. This counts as "both knees down" with regards to rule 3.7.6. in the BoW (Book of War).

Safety Guidelines:

  • Don't deliberately feint directly for illegal targets. Your opponent has a reasonable expectation not to be struck in such areas.
  • Technically hand on weapon, hand on shield, and foot on ground are legal targets (though they receive no damage). However it is discouraged to deliberately strike an opponent repeatedly in such areas.
  • Do not purposefully hit your opponent with a weapon's non-striking surface. (This does not apply in the case of flails, because of the way they are generally fought with. But they are also adequately padded to keep injury from occuring because of this.)

Etiquette (as a heads up)

  • If you strike your opponent in the head, give them a chance to shake it off. You should not use such a strike, whether it was deliberate or accidental, to help get a kill on your opponent.
(With that said, accidents happen. Sometimes your opponent doesn't know they struck your head, or realizes it to late to check a follow up swing. Also remember, others on the field are under no obligation to not attack you while you're letting your opponent recover, or may not realize what is going on, so watch your back.)
  • Don't deliberately strike your opponent in the groin. It is a killing blow, and will be accepted as such. However if you are deliberately and repeatedly striking an opponent there, it can be grounds for suspension from the rest of the practice.
(Unfortunately accidents can and do happen, and in the case of javelins, often repeatedly happen. The key word for this rule is deliberately.)
  • Please identify your hit if your stabbing two handed or swinging a red weapon to break a shield. Yelling Green, Red, or 2 should be sufficient. This just helps your opponent keep track of things.
  • Archers, please give your target an opportunity to take the hit before you call it. While it's easy to see that an arrow hit, it's often difficult to see where. If you're sure it struck a different location, you are of course free to call it.
  • It's always all right to ask your opponent why a blow didn't count, when the time is appropriate. This isn't meant to offend anyone; it helps people to learn and become better fighters.
  • Optional courtesy calls:
Garb - when the hit contacts your clothing, and not your body
Glance - when the hit does not connect solidly (the spear head grazes you then slides past, the sword blade grazes your arm, and so forth)
Tip - similar to 'glance,' but when the tip makes contact but not solidly ("tips" you and slides off)
Light - When the hit is not solid/hard enough to count as minimum force
Shaft - when a javelin (or arrow) doesn't hit with the striking surface (this is something for the attacker to call)
Flat - when the flat of a weapon (which is a non-striking surface) makes contact instead of weapon's striking surface
Courtesy - called when striking an opponent lightly from behind, so that they know it wasn't a accidently light hit.
Armor - when a hit is stopped by your armor.
